It time for the Teen Summer Reading Program! Signing up is painless!

Teens get a card and when you get nine clips from the card, you can turn it in for the drawing and prizes! The grand prize drawing includes $50 cash cards from US Bank.

Anyway, just to tie back in to graphic novels, one of the clips on the card is reading a graphic novel. Or a graphic nonfiction. Or a biography.

So if you read Houdini, reviewed already in this blog, that would be a graphic novel – nonfiction – biography. Three clips!

Here’s our first volume of Yurara!

Yurara Tsukinowa is a nice girl who has ability to see ghosts and sense their emotions. This gift can cause her problems, as she often can’t help but react to what she, but no one else, sees. When she starts at her new school, she is dismayed to find a ghost sitting at her new desk. Luckily for Yurara, two boys in her class, Mei Tendo and Yako Hoshino, can also see ghosts and have spiritual powers to fight the nastier ones. Yurara also develops a new power; she has a strong (and beautiful) guardian spirit which emerges to fight and release spirits into the next world.

This is a fun new series. There are serious moments, but a great deal of humor as well. Mei keeps trying to flirt with Yurara, either version of her. The boys keep arguing with each other, and the other girls in Yurara’s class are furious that she is getting Mai and Yako’s attention.

Want something else new? Ask for it here! You can ask for manga, anime, movies, music, novels, or anything that we might buy. I can’t guarantee that the library will purchase everything (limits of budget, collections, etc.) but it can’t hurt to ask. And if the item is purchased, you will be the first to check it out! (Unless someone else asked for it first…)

While most people know about our manga collection, they don’t always realize that we have books about manga and anime too!

The first book we purchased was The Anime Companion by Gilles Poitras. This book, and its sequel The Anime Companion 2, are more than guides to the hot phenomenon of Japanese animation, this book offers an encyclopedia treatise on the culture that produces it. More than 500 glossary-style entries explore the author’s rants on “fandom, food, anime babes, large eyes, and sex and bloody noses”. Both books include hundreds of entries, photos, and drawings.

We have also started picking up a few series-specific books. Two of these are The Art of InuYasha and Naruto Anime Profiles. Since both of these books focus on the animated series, they can be found in the YA7914 section.

Essentially, I put out the BookLetter whenever I catalog manga and graphic novels for the Juvenile and Young Adult departments. You can sign up to get the BookLetter emailed whenever it is updated.

There may be only one title, there may be twenty; there may be three new updates in a week or none at all. It depends on what I receive and when I can catalog it. I do try to catalog new volumes as quickly as possible.
